Elphie the Elf

To say I am a bit obsessed with this whole Elf on the Shelf business would be accurate. I don't even have kids for crying out loud!! It's funny though because my entire family and their work friends have all gotten really into Elphie and her escapades. We are all kids at heart (queue sappy music).

Elphie joined our house on December 4th and each day we 'find' her in a new place. Here is her journey so far. Some of these ideas are SO DONE but some are just from my crazy mind and are just different :)

Day #1 I arrived by Antelope, not UPS as some believe
Day #2 My favorite food groups, candy, sugar, syrup
Day #3 Defying gravity like my namesake
Day #4 Making snow angles from sugar because there is no snow here
Day #5 Rub a dub dub Elphie's in the tub
Day #6 Hanging out on the family pic, Elphie may have drawn uni-brows/mustaches on everyone
Day #7 Gone Fishing for the bionic never gonna die goldfish
Day #8 contrary to my previous inclination, this was nothing like the ball pit at McD's
Day #9 I PG'd this activity right up :) Nobody needs to see Elf bottom
Day #10 Donuts are also on Elphie's top food groups list
Day #11 Just couldn't resist the disco balls on the tree and making pink bell bottoms
Day #12 Improvising with the sled due to lack of snow

The earmuffs and scarf were unnecessary but added to the situation
Day #13 Elphie was offended she was not included in the hanging of the stockings so she fixed that
Day #14 Telling Elphie she can't do something is the worst thing you can do
Exhibit #1
Day #15 the Fuzz found out able the tag removal and arrested Elphie. But she Houdini-ed her way out of that situation
Day #16 Getting her Bob Ross on and painted a still life of her friend Fiyero
She's not great at spelling
Day #17 Dinner with her peeps. Ty the Penguin, NapoLEON Dynamite, Harry Pottah, Vern her tae kwon do instructor, and Gumbie. They had spaghetti and meatballs. Vern had a tough time with his chopsticks but he wouldn't be swayed.
OK I admit, this is getting ridiculous. But Elphie only has a few days left so she's gotta make the most of it!!

Helvetica

Last night on Instagram I posted this photo:

I was working on a wedding shower invite for my cousins friend and I randomly took a picture of my screen and posted it just because I can. One of my many IG followers (really I'm super famous on IG) Kristin commented on it and asked what fonts I used. (Perhaps I'll change the invite info. and post the completed invitation someday too).

I have a confession. I am in love with fonts. I don't care who knows it. I don't care if it's a sans font or an un-sans font they are (almost) all wonderful. Comic Sans is not wonderful and I will flick your earlobes with all the strength my double jointed fingers can muster if I catch you using it.

Confession, the first thing I did when I got my laptop was google fonts and downloaded about 80.

To commemorate my love of fonts, and my ever growing collection I decided to do one of those little fonts I love things that are all the rage right now. At least in my digital font loving world.

Disclaimer: I am at work doing this on my laptop so I don't have photo shop. I made this in word then took a screen shot so it's not great quality but it's the best I can do tonight.

I didn't want to find the sources of these fonts, I literally just google them and download them as I find them. They are all FREE.I really wish blogger would get some better fonts. I actually like all the fonts they have it would be fun to have a few more options #firstworldproblems.

Anywhooo here it is:

This does not even begin to scratch the surface of my favorite fonts. But it will have a suffice for now whilst I am without photo shop.

PS: Kristin, the fonts I used in the first photo are- DK Suco De Laranda, Janda Stylish Script (it's also the font I used for the 'my favorite fonts' title), Simon Script, and Baskerville? That last one that says Fredrick was changed and I didn't save the file on my laptop.

The Janda fonts are all great, for some reason they didn't make it on here so perhaps I'll have to do another one.

I < 3 fonts

just for fun found via pinterest

it's really true, even using a san serif font wouldn't look as official

if the world ran on comic sans.....

You did what?

I get made fun of a lot in my family. I admit I do/try some pretty quirky things that probably warrant that teasing but still....

One time I bought Main and Tail shampoo/conditioner. The kind they use on horses. Someone told me it would make my hair shiny like a horses mane. It didn't. When I went to the local feed store to buy it, I had to pretend I owned a horse so I bought other horse related items to make it seem 'legit'. That's embarrassing.

One time I put mayonnaise in my hair because someone told me it would make it shiny. It didn't. And it was disgusting.

One time I rinsed my hair out with vinegar to make it shiny. It didn't. I just walked around smelling like Easter all day.

One time I beat up an egg and spread it all through out my hair to make it shiny. Guess what? It didn't. That was the worst one I think.

One time I used coconut oil in my hair just to make it softer/hydrate it. It worked but it was messy and made my hair greasy for a day or two.

One time I made up this concoction of the following: 1 t. apple cider vinegar, 1 t. glycerine, 1 beaten egg, 2 T of castor oil. Mix the first two ingredients then add the others and mix well.

Next, try not to gag and saturate your hair with the mixture (it makes your hair really stiff and difficult to comb through so be sure to brush your hair before you start). I tried using one of those hair coloring brushes but my hands worked better. If you're hair is longer than your shoulders I would probably double the batch (I will next time, half my hair was still dry-ish when I ran out). Then I put one of those plastic granny caps on and wrapped it turban style with a towel (is that politically correct?) and let it sit on my hair for 2 hours. Ya....kind of embarrassing but whatever.
After two hours I hopped in the shower to wash that gunk out. I shampooed it twice and conditioned once then ran my hair under the tub faucet for a few minutes after I was done to make sure it all got out.

Then I blew it dry and it wasn't even that crazy!! Usually my hair is frizzy and poofy but after using this stuff it's a little smoother and lots softer. You're supposed to do this 2x a week for 1 month then just once or twice a month after that.

I still need to get a cut/trim at some point but for now this will help a bit.

So far today.....

This is what I've done:

demoed our uglllly bathroom that we are going to have redone by next Tuesday when Ty comes home....ohh boy. Give me a crowbar and 30 minutes and I can do work. After blogging I'm gonna start on the counter, except maybe I'll just start on the bottom doors because I don't do plumbing. What started this epidemic, we saw this picture yesterday and started today, we think things through around here.

Screen printed 6 tshirts for next Tuesday for family to wear. I still have several more to do but am waiting for the shirts from people. Once I got the screen printed correctly it took about an hour.

I've started printing on sticky notes after I take scripture study notes so I can include them in my scriptures and not have scribbly unreadable margins....which I'll still have but that's not the point. I just like to print on post-it's, I gotta get some better colors though.

Although these items were done in the exact opposite order. Scriptures were first, then tshirts, then the bathroom. Taking a small Sonic happy hour raspberry limeaid break, the best ever.

Oh I might have watched the Olympics a bit too....no judgement zone it only happens 2 weeks every 2 years ok. Water polo is my favorite (the mens version is more intense and funner to watch though). I also quite enjoy Apparatus Gymnastics too, I can't wait for ribbon dancing, I'm not even kidding.

ALSO I've made my bed everyday for the last 5 days, that's a record for me, I used to find no reason to make my bed besides just throwing the covers around a bit but now I love it, it makes my entire room look so much cleaner. Go me!!

Healthy Fudgesicles

I haven't done a Pinterest post for awhile....woops. So I thought I would post real quick before mutual tonight. A friend pinned this and I decided that I wanted to try them, and I'm glad I did.

Image from Pinterest- the link doesn't work so there is no attached website. Weird.
I can't find my Popsicle molds so I had to get a little creative but I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's the ingredients.

1/2 Cup coconut milk (mine was light)
1 medium banana
2 T cocoa powder
teeeeny tinnnny pinch of salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp Agave-optional
Optional: peanut butter- didn't use it this time but might try it next time

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour into popsicle molds or you can do what I did. I lined a mini muffin tin (12) with mini liners, then I poured the mixture into each well. Freeze until frozen. I did add toothpicks to each 'pop' but just skip that step, it doesn't hold up very well.

Once they are frozen through (or mostly frozen if you're like me and too impatient), remove the paper and eat!! They are good. I make a smoothie that is very similar to this but it's liquid. Each little 'puck' of fudgesicle is aprox 15 calories. Heck yes.

They are a tasty alternative to a regular fudgesicle. I love the little hint of banana. You could also add a small pinch of cinnamon if you feel so inclined.

**Edit I have a hard time getting the cups out of the muffin tin. I would use a silicone cupcake tray next time to make them easier to get out, that way you can also avoid the cupcake liners. Or just be smart and use Popsicle molds, they will be much larger though, therefore more calories maybe around 60ish which still isn't bad at all.

By the Inch, it's a Cinch

This will count for my Pinterest post for the week.

Last weekend we had out YW broadcast. Unfortunately I was a bit late getting to our meeting so I only got to see the last 2 talks, but they are available for rewatching or rereading. Maybe I'll watch what I missed today.

One of my favorite quotes that I heard was from President Monson he said this:

That just makes sense to me. When you look at the huge picture of life, it feels very overwhelming, trying to predict what will happen, but if we break it down, it's easier to handle. That's not saying we shouldn't have long term goals, because that's very important but we can take those goals one step at a time. That's funny, I was just reading a story about this, it's called the Daffodil Principle I think I'll share that story too!! Why not!!
..............................................................................................................................

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you must come see the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. "I will come next Tuesday, "I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn!  The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see bad enough to drive another inch!"

My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, Mother."Well, you won't get me back on the road until it clears, and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her.

"I was hoping you'd take me over to the garage to pick up my car." "How far will we have to drive?"  "Just a few blocks," Carolyn said. "I'll drive. I'm used to this."

After several minutes, I had to ask, "Where are we going? This isn't the way to the garage!" "We're going to my garage the long way," Carolyn smiled, "by way of the daffodils."

"Carolyn," I said sternly, "please turn around." "It's all right, Mother, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience."

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, "Daffodil Garden." We got out of the car and each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight.

It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it down over the mountain peak and slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns -- great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, saffron, and butter yellow. Each different colored variety was planted as a group so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue.

There were five acres of flowers. "But who has done this?" I asked Carolyn. "It's just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory.

We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster:
"Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking"
50,000 bulbs.
One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.
Began in 1958.

There it was...."The Daffodil Principle."  For me, that moment was a life-changing experience.
I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun -- one bulb at a time -- to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Still, just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world. This unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of ineffable (indescribable) magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.

The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time -- often just one baby-step at a time --and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time.

When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world!

"It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. "What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it 'one bulb at a time' through all those years. Just think what I might have been able to achieve!

"My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. "Start tomorrow," she said. It's so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask....
"How can I put this to use today?"

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.  We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice vacation, or when we retire.

The truth is there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with...  and remember that time waits for no one.

So, stop waiting...

Until your car or home is paid off
Until you get a new car or home
Until your kids leave the house
Until you go back to school
Until you finish school
Until you lose 10 lbs.
Until you gain 10 lbs.
Until you get married
Until you get a divorce
Until you have kids
Until you retire
Until summer
Until spring
Until winter
Until fall
Until you die

There is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one's watching.

...................................................................................
I just really liked this 'principle' and it's kind of funny that I was just reading this before I came across this quote again. So fun when things work out like that eh?

Pinterest #8

I'm officially eliminating the name Pinterest Crafting. Now it's just Pinterest. Because I hardly do Pinterest crafts but I do other Pinterest things. How many times can I say that word in two sentences? Geesh.

Today was going to be a post about our amazing Temple Time Capsule Mutual activity from last night but the SNOW had other ideas. Gah, I was seriously so upset last night. The roads were pretty clear but I guess the church parking lot was snowy which totally stinks. I had guest speakers coming and everything ready (spent 5 hrs prepping yesterday alone) only to have it shut down at 6. OH WELL it will happen in a couple weeks.

Onward!!

Today's first Pinteresting idea comes from my hair board. First is this hair bow. I found a video of it on Pinterest and repinned it to my "Do's" Board. I think I have too much hair for this though. I had to pull a lot of my hair through to hide the ends but then the side parts were kind of flimsy. I call it my Minnie Mouse meets Lady Gaga look....BTW I've never worn this in public. It was just a fun experiment because I can never do cute things to my gross hair.

Here's the video if you're interested:

I wish I had hair like that!! Meaning hair that is shiny...

The next Pinteresting thing I'll post about is my nails that I did for Valentines day. This idea is a combination of several pinned nail ideas.
 Supplies:
Art Deco (long skinny brush) in Pink and White
Solid base color- mine is NYC grey something something
Top coat- mine is Revlon, it's about $3-4 a bottle but it lasts quite a long time (surprising for how often I paint my nails) It gives it a really nice shine plus it dries very quickly.

Start by painting your base nails with whatever color you choose. Let it dry well. Then very carefully paint white stripes horizontally across each nail (please ignore the shaky crooked lines). Once that's dry, use your fun accent color to paint a heart or paint over a few white stripes etc...whatever you'd like to do. Since doing this, I found a much easier way to do the hearts.
Once the layers are all dry top with the top coat.

Well that was fun. I have so much to do today (mostly involving cleaning up my messes and my room) but I might decide to procrastinate and start reading Hunger Games book 1 just one time before the MOVIE 21 DAYS!!!!!! I read part of an article from the author who just saw the movie. She said it was great and she loved that they were able to show other points of view (not just Katniss). She talked about seeing Snow in his rose garden, the capitol control room, etc....SO EXCITING. gosh it all comes back to Hunger Games doesn't it?

The Games {Pinterest #8}

Today is Pinterest day. Well I haven't really done many pinteresting things the last couple weeks, far too busy. So instead of a craft or recipe I thought I'd share my Hunger Games Mania!! I had to start an entire board just for HG stuff.....I promise I do have a life....somewhere. But when I see fun Hunger Games stuff, I have to pin it because I'm so super excited for the movie and they are some of my favorite books.

President Snow...

So far all the pictures I've seen from the movie set are pretty close to what I saw in my head while reading :) that makes me happpppy. The boy with the bread.
SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read these books and like to be surprised, don't read the following photo. K?
 Spoiler Alert is OVER Phew.
I LOVE this picture. Also, I totally don't mind that Lenny Kravitz is playing Cinna, that one preview before she shoots up out of the ground makes me so excited.
This soundtrack is going to be really good. I can't wait for it to get released. I already like half the songs on it so I'll be getting it for sure.

28 Days. EEEEKK.

Link to my Hunger Games board.

Maybe next week I'll actually post something productive. I'm getting stuff ready for a big YW activity for next week's mutual. Possibly I'll post about that. Last night we made sushi...HUGE hit. It was a fun skill to learn, tasty too :)

Life. {& Pinterest #7?}

Sometimes life happens. Sometimes I don't get around to blogging (try to hold back your tears). Sometimes I forget that I 'promised' a Pinterest Thursday. Sometimes real life is more important. Sometimes real life is hard. Sometimes life makes me exhausted. Sometimes I sleep in until 10am because I literally cannot open my eyes any sooner. Sometimes I'm embarrassed about that. But mostly, I'm ok with it. 3 days out of the week I get very broken up sleep at work which is ok, so I shouldn't be ashamed when I have to sleep in a bit.

I think I say this all the time, but this month literally is crazyy. Last month seemed to drag on forever, but this month (last week in particular) there was so much crammed in, I'm ready for a vacation. There's just a lot going on with church all the time, work is pretty much the same as usual 5 shifts a week at the GH with 4 of those shifts happening on 2 days-actually kind of nice, Shelley doesn't have a job so I literally have her every minute of the week that I'm not at the GH. But it's ok, it's good to be busy.

This last weekend we had our YW New Beginnings. I think it was pretty successful, took a lot of time to prepare but it's worth it. We had minimal decorations (score) and lots of fun refreshments, fruit skewers, 2 kinds of cake pops, caramel corn, & chocolate hot air balloon suckers. We had some talks, watched a couple short video clips, we had a balloon release. We had all the people write their testimonies on a quarter sheet of paper then attach them to yellow balloons then went outside to release them. It was dark and rainy but in the end all the balloons floated away. We might do it again in the summer so we can actually watch the balloons ;). All in all it was worth all the time and effort, we have what I believe to be, the best group of young women, ever. :)Just my humble opinion. They all get along great, even though we're all combined in one large group, they make everyone feel welcome no matter what, they try hard to do their best in all their various endeavors, I consider them all to be my good friends. I get sad if I miss a mutual activity (rare) or don't see them on Sunday. They are all awesome.

Anyways that was a little random but that's alright.

So I guess I'll include my Pinterest post for the week here. Kind of cheating but whatever.

This last week my photo was chosen for a contest on the Totally Rad site. They are a company specializing in photoshop actions and products. I own them all. My 'recipe' was posted on their site then they posted it to Pinterest, so super exciting to see people pinning MY picture/recipe on their boards!! Not to toot my own horn, but it has the most repins and likes out of all the other photos/recipes :)
Straight from their site. Hollllla.

This is also from my pinterest board "I'm Hungry for the Games" to compile all my Hunger Games geek-outs I had to make a whole board...ridiculous, I know.
FYI

Here's the video to the song that I have playing on repeat, seriously LOVE it. It's my favorite TSweezy song ever.
The dude totally looks like Johnny Depp :). Also my favorite line is, 'don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire, the war outside our door keeps raging on.' It makes me think of the world we live in, while we don't have a literal war outside our doors here, there are lots of battles being fought by individuals. We should just keep our homes safe and our 'doors' closed to the bad things of the world.

Pinterest Crafting #6

I can't believe I've already done 6 of these Pinterest blogs. I found a really funny site yesterday that posts Pinterest Fails...check it out. It's pretty funny.

Today I'm debating what to post...I've been so busy I can barely keep up the last couple weeks. I was going to post some pictures I took last Thursday but since we're having our New Beginnings for church this weekend I thought I'd post about that!

Our decided theme is Arise and Shine Forth--it's also our 2012 Mutual Theme.

I started by making these invites:
For some reason I just decided that hot air balloons would be a good theme...ahhhh. So that means I bought a hot air balloon chocolate mold (that will hopefully arrive before Sunday) to make some suckers. I spent an entire day paper macheing balloons to make my own hot air balloons, which I cannot figure out how to paint so they probably won't even get used, such a waste of a Saturday and about 5 bottles of glue ;) haha. That's actually the Pinterest part of this, I retaught myself how to paper mache from a Pinterest link.

I also found an idea on Pinterest to make YW Personal Progress Goal cards. I really like how her's turned out, but I knew I wouldn't have time to cut out all those separate colors so I made up my own version that just prints out on 2 8.5x11 pages. We are going to roll them up and wrap them with ribbon for each of the girls to take home.

I just took a screen shot and cropped it for you to see. If for some reason you'd like a copy of the real document, I can email you a .doc or a PDF, just send me an email or comment.

That's it for today. I have so much to do it's not even funny.

Pinterest Crafting #5

This post will actually be more like Pinterest baking...or Pinterest microwaving...

A little known (or perhaps well known?) fact about me is I LOVE caramel corn. I've been known to manipulate a mom or two into making me some. I never knew I had the power to make my own, WEIRD. haha I just get too bored standing at the stove, and getting burned from the steam is not very fun. So when I came across this 6 Minute Caramel, I knew I had to try it. Lucky for me, we had all the ingredients so I started posthaste.

The first time I made this, I poured it into an 8x8 dish to cool. It took, f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to set up, and never really did. So I smartened up.

For FHE this week we listened to some talks so I made this 6 minute caramel again (at the request of my brother) but this time, I air popped a batch of popcorn and poured the caramely ooy gooy goodness over the popcorn. It was a huge hit. I didn't even bake it, which makes it a little more sticky but that's alright.

Here's the recipe:

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in microwave safe bowl.
  2. Cook 6 minutes, stirring every two minutes.
  3. Stir and pour into lightly greased dish. (at this point, you should have a bowl of kernel free popcorn waiting and pour it allllll over, then skip all the other steps.)
  4. Let cool.
  5. Cut, wrap in wax paper & store in air tight container.

The next day my brother tried to force me to make him some more...but it's reallllly not an every day treat haha, they'd have to forklift us out of the house if it was.

There was quite a bit of caramel in this batch, I used 1/2 cup of corn kernels. Next time I might do a little more popcorn so it's not quite so covered...although that's part of why it's so good ;)

Here's a link to my baking board. I recently pinned a recipe for a cookie dough dip made from chickpeas, a recipe for coconut milk w/ cocoa whipped together, and a link to how to make your own powdered sugar using sugar substitutes.

Enjoy!

Pinterest Crafting #4

For this week's pinterest craft, I made a really neat holder for my small church books. I found the link last night and pinned it, then just made it in about an hour.

It's meant to hold the YW Personal Progress book, Journal, pen, and strength of youth pamphlet. However, I don't have the journal so I just put my YW camp for leaders pamphlet in there for now.

Then it folds over itself to make this cute little package:
I love it. I have a hard time keeping all my little books in one place and this is the perfect solution for me. It's not a big bulky case, it's just barely bigger than the books themselves.

Here are a few links if you'd like to make your own!!

Direct link to the directions/tutorial

My Church Board

My Sewing Board

On another note, on Monday I got to take one of the residents at my work on a fun overnight trip to Semiahmoo Resort. If you want to getaway, I highly recommend this place. Right now is their off season so we were given a free upgrade to a waterview room (which is another $80 value). It's so pretty up there I could have spent the entire time on the beach but it was pretttty cold.

All pictures were taken with my point and shoot, which I was pretty impressed with, much better quality than my old one, hurray!!

Next Week's Pinterest day....might be about New Beginnings we're planning for church..maybe. I spent an entire day last week paper macheing balloons to go with our theme. We'll see.

Oh ya!! This was originally going to be my Pinterest Craft for the week:

CAKE POPS!! Prolly not the cutest you've ever seen but nobody seemed to mind :). The half covered ones were for my family...the chocolate started hardening and I didn't have enough left anyways so they got the gross looking ones, they didn't care.
